Hello. This is Jack from ToFluency.com and in this English lesson called ‘The Bear’ we’re going to have a look at a Passive Voice example, the word ‘obsessed’ and the phrasal verb. So, here is the picture that I took on Instagram. You can follow me at ToFluency and this is what I said about the photo, “This photo was taken in the local nature center. To be honest, I’m a little bit obsessed with black bears. I can’t believe I live somewhere that has bears in the area. One came into our yard a couple of years ago. Our dog scared it off and it climbed the neighbor’s tree. It stayed there for a couple of hours before heading off down the street."
So first, I want to share a passive example. This photo was taken in the local nature center.” So, this is an example of the passive voice and I’m putting the focus on this photo. The focus of the sentence is ‘this photo’. Now, I’m doing this because you know who took it. It was taken by me. And, additionally, I just want to put the focus on the photo. So, that’s a good example of the passive voice.
Next, I used the word ‘obsessed’. To be honest, I’m a little bit obsessed with black bears.” Now, ‘obsessed’ means to be really interested in something, in this case. Because, we can also use obsessed in a negative way. If you are obsessed with exercising then it sounds like you’re doing it too much that it’s unhealthy. If you’re dedicated about exercising then that sounds good. But, in the way that I used it, it’s not really used in a negative way. It’s more of a fun way to say “I love black bears.” And now, our phrasal verb, ‘scare off’, “Our dog scared it off and it climbed the neighbor’s tree.” So, to ‘scare off’ is to make someone or something leave because they are frightened. They are scared. “My dog started barking at this bear and it scared it off.”
Now, my question for you is “Have you seen a bear before?” “Have you seen a bear before?” Leave your answers below this video. Thanks for watching and I’ll see you next time.
