Session description: In 2008, Yale University piloted Celebrate Sustainability: a week of events related to sustainability on campus. Over the past six years, this sustainability week has become a major outreach effort for Yale, involving over 40 events, 25 organizations, and 1500 participants in 2014 alone. Although the structure of Celebrate Sustainability has evolved since its inception, the purpose of the week – the promotion of sustainability on campus and in the community through a series of events – has not only remained, but become increasingly relevant as the state of the global climate continues to decline. The level of engagement achieved through Yale’s sustainability week suggests that campuses, specifically education and outreach managers, should make large-scale event planning a fundamental component of their engagement strategy. It also makes the case for the potential success of a state-wide sustainability week for the upcoming academic year.
